As I flipped through the papers, I realized that the work Astor Stone, Inc. did went well beyond US borders, and appeared to be much more than a run-of-the-mill private investigation firm like its letterhead stated.

Another file contained groups of stapled photos, each featuring a different “target,” per the label. The last photo of each stack was stamped deceased, depicting images of the target dead, bloodied, beaten, or shot between the eyes.

My hands trembled. What have I gotten myself into?

I set the box aside and reluctantly picked up another, this one buried in the back. It seemed that secrets in the bins only got worse the deeper they went, so I decided to flip to the final chapter.

This bin was lighter than the others, with only a single folder inside. Anticipation snaked up my spine as I pulled out the papers and stared down at a black-and-white mug shot of Ryder.
